Universiti Putra Malaysia UPM Alumni Association (PAUPM)

The Universiti Putra Malaysia Alumni Association (PAUPM) brings together all UPM alumni to remain connected and actively contribute to their alma mater. With nearly 70 years of establishment, the association reflects the enduring relevance of UPM alumni and their continuous contributions from past to present. PAUPM organises a wide range of activities to uphold the spirit of knowledge and service that has been instilled since the beginning of every alumnus’ journey at UPM.

The association has organised various activities, including golf tournaments, fishing competitions, courtesy visits, as well as agricultural seminars and workshops. Key programmes include the National Coconut Workshop 2016 (NCW2016), Harumanis Workshop 2017, Herbal Seminar 2023, International Pineapple Industry Seminar 2025 (SINAR2025), and the National Coconut Seminar 2025 (NCS2025). In addition, PAUPM hosts annual Ramadan Iftar gatherings and Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations. The association also supports UPM students through the Freemeals programme, which provides free meals and is typically conducted during the month of Ramadan.

Most recently, PAUPM introduced a monthly Meet & Greet session. This initiative offers UPM alumni, particularly PAUPM members, the opportunity to engage in informal and meaningful interactions with PAUPM committee members and fellow alumni. The session also serves as a platform for sharing information, ideas, and suggestions to further strengthen PAUPM’s role and contributions to the alma mater, society, and the nation.

PAUPM remains committed to supporting Universiti Putra Malaysia in achieving its objectives, while continuing to contribute to the well-being of society and the development of the country.

History of PAUPM

Recognising the need to strengthen connections among alumni and with their alma mater, several alumni groups were established in Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru under the name Persatuan Bekas Siswa Kolej Pertanian Malaya. These groups became active in Kuala Lumpur in the 1960s and were officially registered as Persatuan Bekas Siswa Kolej Pertanian Malaya with the Selangor State branch of the Registrar of Societies Malaysia (ROS Selangor) on 29 June 1971. The association represents former students of the Agricultural School, the College of Agriculture Malaya, Universiti Pertanian Malaysia, and Universiti Putra Malaysia.

Today, PAUPM has a history of more than 60 years and continues to play an active role in supporting its alma mater by fostering alumni engagement through various collaborative activities with the university.

With the growing number of students enrolling at UPM each year, the alumni community continues to expand. Graduates from 2004 onwards are automatically recognised as members of the Universiti Putra Malaysia Alumni Association.

On 1 October 2015, the PAUPM office relocated from the UPM Rugby Club House to the ground floor of the Putra Chancellery Building, UPM’s main administrative centre. The association extends its sincere appreciation to the former Vice-Chancellor of UPM, YBhg. Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mohd Fauzi Haji Ramlan, for granting PAUPM the use of this space.

Renovation works were carried out over a two-month period from August to the end of September 2015. PAUPM also records its appreciation to the UPM Rugby team for accommodating the association’s operations at the Rugby Club House prior to the relocation.

Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) began as an Agricultural School on 21 May 1931, occupying 22 acres in Serdang, Selangor. At its inception, the institution offered two programmes: a three-year Diploma programme and a one-year Certificate programme in agriculture.

On 23 June 1947, the Agricultural School was upgraded to the College of Agriculture Malaya by Sir Edward Gent, the Governor of the Malayan Union at the time.

The establishment of Universiti Pertanian Malaysia resulted from the merger of the Agricultural School in Serdang with the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Malaya. Dr. Mohd. Rashdan bin Haji Baba, then Principal of the College of Agriculture Malaya, was appointed as Vice-Chancellor under Section 18 of the Universities and University Colleges Act 1971. The university commenced its first academic session on 23 July 1973, enrolling 1,559 students across three founding faculties and one foundation division: the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science, the Faculty of Forestry, the Faculty of Agriculture, and the Division of Basic Sciences. During this period, academic focus was placed on forestry and veterinary studies in line with national policies and development needs.

In the 1980s, Universiti Pertanian Malaysia expanded its academic scope to include Science and Technology (S&T). On 3 April 1997, the university was officially renamed Universiti Putra Malaysia by former Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad. This change reflected UPM’s evolution into a comprehensive institution of higher learning, offering a wide range of disciplines, particularly in science and information technology, to support national development in the new millennium.

Now, Universiti Putra Malaysia have about 15 faculties included 13 at Serdang Campus and 2 from Sarawak Campus. You may refer to this website for more info about UPM https://upm.edu.my/
